Full Itinerary:
Day 1 – Cusco to Santa Maria:
You will be picked up at 7.00 am from your hotel. Then you will be driven through the stunning Sacred Valley, then we go up to the high pass de Malaga (4300 masl). Here you will receive some advices about the tours in biking from the guide. Then our fun bike starts… freewheeling down quiet but challenging roads, changing landscapes, you will not want to catch your breath until the first picnic stop in Alfamayo three hours from your starting point. Here you will enjoy your lunch, while taking in the panoramic views after a quick change and a dab of insect repellant; it is onwards and downwards towards Huamanmarca, site of a recently discovered archaeological Inca finding where your tour guide will provide you with its historical background. You will then carry on descending to 1500 meters, while the jungle´s edge rears up to the small but charming town of Santa Maria. Here you can browse the internet, buy snack or just rest your legs and enjoy a cold beer before a dinner of traditional Peruvian food. Here you will stay in a family run hostel and sleep in either single, double or triple rooms (Hostel Choquequirao).
Day 2 – Santa María – Santa Teresa:
You will wake up at around 6.30am, shake off your weary limbs and enjoy the finest indigenous coffee prepared by your landlady for a 6.30am breakfast. Under dawn skies you will begin your walk, which gets progressively steeper, until arriving at a welcoming family restaurant in Santa Maria where you can relax in hammocks, admiring the coca plantations and receive refreshments whilst being entertained by the family monkey. After a short walk you will reach a traditional Inca Trail, which winds around precipitous slopes and sheer drops for approximately half a mile. The descent continues for just over two hours until you reach Qellomayo, a small town, where you will have lunch.
From Qellomayo it is a short walk beside the Rio Vilcanota until reaching the famous hot springs of Colcamayo. Here you can rejuvenate in the hot waters and relax in these natural settings.
After relaxing in the hot springs you will carry on to Santa Teresa where you will spend the night (Hostel Machu Picchu).
Day 3 – Santa Teresa to Aguas Calientes:
You will wake up and have breakfast at around 7am. After breakfast you will walk to Colpani taking in the views until you reach the restaurant where you will have lunch at the Hydroelectric. From here it is only about a two and a half hour flat walk to Aguas Calientes, the base town for Machu Picchu.
Included is dinner at a local restaurant before retiring to your hostel with hot water and private bathrooms.
Day 4 – Machu Picchu:
An early start today as you will walk to Machu Picchu to arrive at 6 a.m. which with a bit of luck will coincide with a beautiful sunrise!
Your guide will leave no stones unturned but feel free to challenge their knowledge of Inca history.
Afterwards you have free time to
dally with the llamas and show off your photographic skills. Those who still have the will can tackle Huaynapicchu, which actually looks down on Machu Picchu.
